The
Race Against Global Warming began with my Bar Mitzvah
project. I wanted to combine my love of skiing with
my concern that if climate projections are correct...
skiing is going to be increasingly dependent on snowmaking,
not natural snow.
-- Joshua Wolfgang
Conceived as a Mitzvah, The Race saw over 100 racers
compete in its inaugural season, and many more attend
the apres race party at the Town and Country Lodge
in Stowe, VT. Generously supported by the Stowe community
and nationally recognized industry brands The Race
received wide publicity in area media, raising the
green profile of donors and sponsors.
The level of media support, the generous sponsorship
by area businesses and the ski industry, and the enthusiastic
participation of over 100 racers, raised over $2000.
Proceeds from the race went to support bringing speakers
to Stowe to address climate and environmental issues
before Stowe students and the community.
Going forward the project's goal is to create a scholarship
to be awarded to a gifted Lamoille County student
enrolled in a degree program focusing on biology,
chemistry, physics, or environmental sciences. Competition
for the scholarship will be based on the student's
academic standing, community service, and a submitted
essay focusing on their career goals and aspirations.
Does the future depend on scientific advances
and new sources of clean energy...or does
it require changes in our own behavior and consumptive
habits? We believe it depends on both. The
Race Against Global Warming is our ski community's
response to the challenges facing the industry and
the environment.
We encourage you to support next season's Race: participate,
donate, come to cheer the racers on.
And we encourage you to make some changes in how
you impact on the environment. Take the Clif Bar 2
Mile Challenge. Change your light bulbs. Hang your
laundry outside this summer. Visit Stowe and rent
a bicycle for the weekend as part of the Bicycle Benefits
program you'll save some green by going green.
We're all in this race together.... Thanks for listening....
